Kindly leave your dog at home.

BICYCLES

You may bring bicycles to ride along dirt & gravel roads.

CANOES, KAYAKS, MOTOR BOATS

  • You can bring canoe/kayak for waterfront access; for some groups boats may be provided.
  • The law requires a life jacket for each passenger.
  • Children must paddle with an adult.
  • Want to bring a motorized boat? Notify manager: (804) 769-0368. There is a boat ramp a mile away in Walkerton; minimal donation fee.

TRASH REMOVAL

Please remove all refuse.

PARKING

Tent campers park in designated area before dark.

CAMPFIRE SAFETY

  • When campfire is burning an adult must be present.
  • Extinguish campfire or assign a fire-watcher when you go to another area.
  • Annual Fire Ban Feb. 15 – April 30 before 4pm open air fires are unlawful.
  • Half–hour before final exit please extinguish campfire.

OFF LIMITS

  • Areas marked by barrier fences, locks,  signs.
  • Main house & yard.
  • Quarry next-door.

  • Cabin area steps and dock lead to the beach.
  • Bald eagle nest is visible from the hiking trail.
  • Little dock area is a good place for sandy play at low tide.
  • In 2011 Hurricane Irene ‘left her calling card:’ a downed hilltop tree is now a popular climbing spot while many other large trees cross portions of the  hiking trail.
CAMP WHITEHALL RIVER INFO

THE MATTAPONI [matta-po-NIGH] RIVER

  • is tidal fresh for nearly its whole length.
  • grows brackish (salty) close to West Point where it joins the Pamunkey [pah –MUN-key] River to form the York River.

CAMP WHITEHALL . . .

  • has clean fresh water.
  • has a sandy, muddy river bottom.
  • has no crabs or jelly fish.

PART OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY SYSTEM

Whitehall is around 70 miles above the Chesapeake Bay, a river mile or so above Walkerton, about eight miles below Aylett.

CAMP WHITEHALL TIDES

  • The water level drops four feet between high and low tide daily.
  • Walkerton experiences the highest average vertical tide range in the entire Chesapeake Bay system.

VEGETATION, WILDLIFE, etc.

  • pickerelweed, marsh grasses & plants, cattail, great blue heron, bald eagle, osprey, waterfowl, river otter, eastern painted turtle, beaver, raccoon, opossum, muskrat, green tree frog, peepers, mussels
  • large yellow pond lilies dormant during the winter gradually appear and by summer grow into vivid green lily pad beds forming islands and hugging the shoreline

CHANNEL DEPTH 10 – 15 feet in the middle of the river

AT HIGH TIDE IT IS . . .

  • 6 – 7 feet ~ off the end of the dock/channel-side
  • 4 – 5 feet ~ off platform/channel-side
  • 2 – 4 feet ~ along upriver shoreline
  • 2 – 3 feet ~ along little dock, downriver
